Dr. Patricia Pratt was named the winner of the Goombay Punch Fashion Showcase at the 2018 International Cultural Wine & Food Festival. Dr. Pratt’s original straw-work design featured the iconic Goombay smile, and was chosen via crowd response as the winner of the fashion competition, hosted by the Caribbean Bottling Company.

Three other local designers also presented original designs in the Goombay Punch Fashion Showcase. D'Lethea Nairn, designer of the Pursenal ParaDiyse handbag line, featured a unique, hand-painted burlap bucket backpack, lined with custom branded Androsia print fabric. Kejuan'a Beneby, a Bahamian designer who is featured on the newest season of the international Mission Catwalk reality television show, featured a stylish look that included a body suit with a Goombay Punch logo, paired with an oversized jacket dress with embellishments that reflect the fun and festive colors of the Goombay brand. The final designer, Denise Bethel, is the owner of Bahamas Design, and she featured an original hand-cut, applique t-shirt with Androsia fabric.

It was a hard choice for the enthusiastic crowd at the cultural festival, but Dr. Pratt’s impressive handmade costume won them over, and her design was declared the winner. In addition to being the owner of the Designs by Pat hair and beauty salon and achieving a doctorate degree in the field of cosmetology, Dr. Pratt designs straw dolls, bags, shoes, hats and costumes for the annual Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival parades. She notes that designing is her passion, and she loved using the vibrant colors and designs of the Goombay logo in her winning piece.

Bahamas Goombay Punch has been around for approximately 40 years. The beverage’s logo has become a recognizable Bahamian icon over the past several decades, being embraced by a number of Junkanoo groups and fashion designers. As the official bottler of the Bahamian soda, CBC wanted to highlight the work of the talented men and women who have been inspired by the Goombay smile over the years.

“Goombay Punch is a unique Bahamian beverage that many of us have grown up with, and that Goombay smile is instantly recognizable to most Bahamians,” noted Nikia Wells, CBC Marketing Manager – Communications. “We have seen many local designers who have incorporated the Bahamas Goombay Punch logo in a number of creative and beautiful designs, and we wanted to do something to celebrate their talent and that Goombay love.”

Designers were invited to enter their original clothing, shoe, hat, handbag, jewelry or other fashion accessory designs, and each of the finalists walked away with a Goombay goodie bag.

The CBC team also celebrated their Goombay pride at the 2018 International Cultural Wine & Food Festival with a Bahamas Goombay Punch booth that featured soda samples, Goombay giveaways, and a Goombay happy hour complete with Goombay Mojitos and Goombay Punch face painting.
